Coming to Germany as a Doctor from India – Step by Step

Germany is urgently seeking medical professionals – doctors from India are also very welcome. Here is an overview of the most important steps:

 

1. Requirements in India

  • Completed medical degree (e.g., MBBS)
  • Medical license or registration in India
  • Work experience is helpful but not mandatory
  • Good German language skills (at least B2, often C1)
  • Valid passport and medical fitness

 

2. Learning German

  • In order to practice medicine in Germany, C1 level in the medical language exam is usually required
  • Language certificates from Goethe-Institut, telc or ÖSD are recognized
  • Many programs offer special German courses for doctors

 

3. Recognition of Medical Degree

The foreign qualification must be equivalent to the German medical education

If there are significant differences, a knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) is required

Required documents:

  • Academic transcripts, certificates, curriculum
  • If applicable, translations into German
  • Proof of language proficiency
  • Recognition is carried out by the responsible health authority of the federal state (Land)

 

4. Finding a Job

Apply to:

Hospitals, clinics, or medical care centers (MVZ)

6. Entry & Recognition Phase in Germany

After arrival:

  • Take the medical language exam (C1 Medicine)
  • Take the knowledge test, if required
  • After successfully passing the exams, you receive the Approbation (full medical license)

 

7. Permanent Employment

With Approbation, you may work permanently as a doctor in Germany

After a few years, permanent residency is possible
